How did you get into modeling?
I first started when I took my senior pictures and I just knew that modeling is what I wanted to do. So I went to Denver (I lived in Colorado at the time), and met with an agency. Of course, they were telling me things like your face is so editorial and beautiful and you can do all these things, but you have to lose weight. Completely discouraged, I moved to Houston the following year, signed with an agency there, but they were saying the same thing. The year after that, I came to New York on a whim and signed with JAG! Ever since then I've been working!
What's the best part about your job and what obstacles have you faced?
I have really enjoyed the whole journey I've been through with modeling. It's allowed me to become a stronger person, and it also encourages other people, like my family and friends, to never give up and to always believe in yourself. I always see adversity as an opportunity to grow. So whenever I start to see myself going through bad times, I always remind myself to stay positive, that things will get better, and that I'll come out stronger. But the best part is the travel and all the cool people I get to meet that I would never get to meet and any other job!
What type of future for the fashion industry do you hope for?
I'm hoping we come to a point where there is no separation between size or skin color. I am honestly so tired of having to explain to people that I'm not doing this job or on that runway because of my size. And they always reply with "oh well if you just lost a little weight you could be doing that" and I just say, "well yeah of course I could, but then I wouldn't be me, what would I be standing for? I would be conforming to the stupid rules that fashion has put into place in order to make their jobs easier. I want to challenge the fashion world. And I'll never give up, I will make fashion accept me"
What is your dream destination?
What does your perfect adventure look like?
A perfect adventure to me could be anywhere in the world, as long as I'm with my bestest friends in the whole wide world, we could have fun anywhere. But if I had to choose one place, it would be cliff jumping, swimming in the ocean, bonfires on the beach at the night, singing and dancing around the fire till the sun comes up.
I love Coco Cooper jeans because I feel like they actually fit me! They slide right on, and hug me in all the right places. With other brands, I usually have to go a size bigger to fit my butt and thighs and then they're too big on waist. Or size down to fit my waist and they're too small in my butt and thighs. But Coco Cooper fits me PERFECT.
